WHO Issues Concern Over Severe Lack of Obesity Jabs

Less than one in 10 people that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, warns the WHO as it releases its initial advice on the therapies.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to this class of drugs.

Based on estimates, over two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with thorough and ongoing treatment," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are key obstacles to broad availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, notes the agency.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the present most favorable outlook, the production of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The advice calls on governments and firms to widen availability, through approaches such as voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in a number of nations in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Work

These medications replicate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance the sense of being full so people reduce food intake.

People commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Studies points to people may regain a significant portion a year later of discontinuing the treatment, as their usual food cravings resume.

Being carrying excess weight raises your risk for developing health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in all nations and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
